Mast Chew, a sugar free, organic, plant based chewing gum is a new product to hit shelves that caught our attention.
There are many people who regularly chew gum, yet they may not be aware that most commercial gums are laden with synthetic ingredients. These ingredients include titanium dioxide, petroleum based fillers and resins, as well as artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame. They even sometimes contain Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), a preservative considered toxic and banned in a number of countries. Swallowing commercial chewing gum may also cause gastro intestinal symptoms and therefore, it is widely known that swallowing gum is a no-go…. Mast Chew, however is a very different story!

Australian manufactured Mast Chew is 100% natural and organic.
It is made using a gum called Pistacia resin, extracted from the trunk of the Pistacia genus tree (also known as mastic tree), native to Kurdistan, Turkey, Iraq and Iran. The creator of this seemingly novel gum, Dr Sharifi, has many years of experience, having created an organic chewing gum in the Middle East over 30 years ago. This product is still being produced and sold in many Middle Eastern countries.

In contrast with unpleasant gastro intestinal symptoms which often occur when traditional gum is swallowed, Mast Chew can be digested by the body.
It has even been shown to be helpful in the treatment of stomach ulcers. Mastic gum has a long history with thousands of years of traditional use. It has been shown to have anti-microbial properties, providing oral hygiene benefits by helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, so prevalent in western society.
To create the sweet, minty taste, alcohol sugar xylitol and mint are added. This helps to freshen breath and provide a clean mouth feeling.
We were curious to try this gum, and found that although flavour didn’t last long, it has a great taste and importantly, had the desired effect of freshening the palate.
From an environmental perspective, it is good to know that unlike commercial chewing gums, Mast Chew is biodegradable. Another tick!
Mast Chew is available for sale in Australia and internationally online.
